Top 5 Best Fillet Knife for Fish in 2017 - Comparison

If you’re a kitchen buff like me, having the best equipment to carry out your chores is of utmost importance. The best fish fillet knife is a much better choice if you’re planning to fillet a fish or a piece of meat than a typical chef’s knife. Besides, having the right equipment improves the whole cooking experience.

Choosing the best fillet knife for the money can be a bit confusing whether you’re a pro or you’re new to the endlessly fascinating world of pristine kitchen gear. We all want razor sharp knives that can glide through the fish fillet and produce a gourmet worthy cut.

Buyer’s Guide On Choosing the Best Fish Fillet Knife

There are a few things to consider when choosing a fillet knife & they are as follows-

      A. Size

A good fillet knife will be made of stainless steel, narrow, between 5 and 11 inches and flexible. Smaller fishes will require knives with smaller blades for easier handling.

B. Flexibility

Flexibility is an important quality of a good fillet knife as a flexible blade will be much more effective than a regular one. The knife handle comes in a variety of materials. Stainless steel, hardwood or plastic. A high-quality fillet knife will have a plastic handle for ease and better manipulation.

C. Multi-purpose

A fillet knife is altogether a good investment because it’s not limited to filleting fish, it can be used to fillet or debone beef, chicken or other types of meat and can be a good substitute for other kitchen knives when they’re unavailable.

Fillet knives also come in a variety of sizes. Always make sure to choose a length suitable for the size of the fish you plan to fillet or better still, purchase a variety of lengths.

Fantastic knife! Very sharp. I use it to fillet salmon, and to remove the silver skin from beef tenderloin. All with ease with this knife. The leather sheath is very useful to protect the knife edge and point, and you from this very sharp blade.

Wusthof Classic 7-Inch Fillet Knife has worked very well for filleting Chinook (King) salmon and Dolly Varden — takes and holds a nice edge, balances well; perfect blade shape for filleting large or small fish. If you aren’t in the habit of keeping a sharpening steel handy, the included little sharpening tool works well, too. Insert knife into sheath carefully as the blade is thin and flexible and can slip between leather and liner. As ever, I suggest a mesh protective glove if you are doing lots of fish or are particularly tired or a bit of a klutz like me.

Wusthof Gourmet knife is pretty good. The blade has held a nice edge so far. The textured runner handle is also nice and I like the sheath. It allows it to dry and holds it well. Been through about 100 gills. At first it was so sharp I’d cut through the fish. It’s a tad stiffer then the old rapala I used. So it took a learning a curve to get used to. Now I’m getting used to it. Time will tell how it holds up though. I would buy it again.
